Brief Description:  Engine kick back troubleshooting

After identifying my engine lack of cranking yesterday I needed to determine an engine cranking kick back problem. I removed the lower spark plugs and turned the engine by hand until I had compression on #1 cylinder and aligned the timing mark on the front of the starter ring gear and retimed the magnetos. After installing the spark plugs and cranking the engine once more I still had kick back so I knew there was something wrong with my timing. I removed the lower plugs again and this time I stuck a pen into the spark plug hole of #1 cylinder as I reached my timing mark on the front of the starter ring gear but as I continued to turn the propeller I noticed the pistion was still moving towards TDC. I knew then that the timing mark on the front of the starter ring gear was not the right one. I noticed that the back of the starter ring gear also had timing marks so I retimed the magnetos using the aft timing marks and used the pen insertion in the spark plug hole technique to confirm piston TDC positioning. Another crank attempt was carried out. No more kick back was observed this time. The next problem had been solved. The engine was however still not firing. Another problem to solve. I'll contact E-mag air this coming week for a consultation.
